    I was really disappointed with the quality of this tool. I purchased it thinking it was a great deal because it’s a Fiskars, but I only used it briefly before deciding to return it for a few reasons: quality concerns and a health warning. I’m sharing my experience with the Fiskars 7079 Big Grip Garden Knife to help others avoid the same mistake. After returning it, I found the Jackson Seven-in-One VersaPlanter Garden Multi-Tool, which is far superior to the Fiskars. Here’s how they compare:

    Fiskars 7079 Big Grip Garden Knife:

    1. Poorly welded – There were holes in the welds, and the work was shoddy. Both sides were indented, with uneven soldering, making it feel unsafe to use.
    2. Health warning included – “This product has chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.” I avoid chemicals in my garden, so why would I use tools that could harm me?
    3. No protective sheath – The knife is sharp enough to injure me or damage any bag I’d put it in.
    4. Claims of rust resistance – The product description states it’s cast aluminum, but aluminum is too soft on its own. What metal is mixed in?

    Jackson Seven-in-One VersaPlanter Garden Multi-Tool:

    1. Exceptionally well-made – It’s solid stainless steel, feeling robust and unlikely to break, unlike the Fiskars. The blade and shaft are thicker and heavier.
    2. Safe grip materials – Made from food-grade polypropylene and TPE, which are not known to be hazardous.
    3. Comes with a quality sheath – A great leather and plastic sheath that securely holds the tool.
    4. Corrosion resistance – It’s stainless steel, which should resist rust. While the quality will be proven over time, it certainly feels durable.
    5. Added functions – I appreciate the twine cutter, tamper, and 12″ measuring tool.

    I don’t know if there’s a better garden tool than the Jackson, but for just about four dollars more, it’s definitely a better investment than the Fiskars.

    Update: I mistakenly compared it against the Jackson Seven-in-One VersaPlanter Garden Multi-Tool, which is currently unavailable. Unfortunately, I wanted to purchase a couple for friends. My advice remains: avoid the Fiskars. If you can’t get the Jackson, opt for any other option. I’ll update again if I find another good knife.

    I absolutely love this garden tool for removing weeds and pesky Bermuda grass. When I encounter a large clump of dirt, the knife or serrated edge helps me break it apart easily. The blade is not only sturdy but also long enough for deep digging to reach those Bermuda roots. This is my second one; I wanted my husband to have one too. The first tool has lasted five years and is still in great shape. I believe that anything from Fiskars is a quality investment. I also own other Fiskars products, including a large paper cutter for my craft room, some scissors, and a blade sharpener. Give it a try—you won’t regret it!

It’s also slightly larger than most trowels, making it a better fit for his hands, and the handle is very comfortable to grip.     I can’t rate this below 4 stars because it truly delivers on its promise. It performs well, gets the job done, and has remained intact for me. The markings on the tool make it easy to determine planting depth, and the blade cuts through roots and tough soil with ease. The forked tip is my favorite feature of the Fiskars Hori, as it allows me to effectively grip and pull out stubborn weeds.

    However, the welding is quite noticeable and not very aesthetically pleasing, which raises concerns about its durability, though I haven’t encountered any issues so far. This might be a quality control problem, as I own another Fiskars tool purchased in-store two years ago that looks much better without the thick, uneven welds and has been performing flawlessly.

    Since neither tool has broken, I’m sticking with 4 stars. It works exceptionally well, but you might end up with one that looks poorly made. It may be worth considering in-person purchases or exploring other brands if that concerns you, even though you might sacrifice the forked tip or end up paying more.
